When your awareness and conduct are harmonious, peace and order prevails.
शमथ। Samatha
It is hard to find a person who does not have an opinion on what is going on around him or her.
Opinions stretch from events in the distant past to what is yet to happen. These can be broadly
classified into good and bad. Opinions, most of the time, are based on one’s perception than on
rationale.
Opinions have the power to bring about change if the person making those does not absolve
himself or herself from the responsibility. If the observation is good, he or she should be ready
to be a part of the movement. If the observation is bad, the person should give time and
resources to enact change. Otherwise, those observations will only add to disorder.
Awareness and observation are not synonymous. Most of the time the latter is thought to be
awareness. Is it enough to observe a storm? Can you stop a storm by shouting at it? Here
conduct comes into the picture. Imagine finding a shelter during a storm and locking the door
from within, leaving others to the mercy of the nature outside. At the same time can you leave
the door open forever? Right conduct involves presence of mind. Otherwise, you will find
yourself exposed to a different kind of storm inside you.
Having an opinion is not the need of the hour; it is a self-centred act. With presence of mind you
will be one with everything and everyone around, and your conduct will be benevolent. You will
find your inner space too liberated. Enjoy the order and growth.
