Desperation is no excuse for recklessness

Desperation is no excuse for recklessness.

“I had no other option” or “They drove me to this” are the most favourite excuses popularly
heard. By declaring such statements of self-absolution, you are telling the world that you are not
responsible for your actions. In other words, it is called passing the buck. You may remain pure
in your eyes, but it is vileness in the eyes of others.

You may justify that desperate situations call for desperate actions. Anybody can shoot an
arrow towards the target, but only the calm and clear-headed will hit the bullseye. Do you want
to be the one who puts yourself as well as those around you in danger to achieve your target or
do you want to be the clear-headed person who hits the bullseye silently? If you are not sure,
just think who among the two you prefer to be with.

Self-absolution gives you short-term relief from mental agony. Just as in the case of any other
short-term relief, you will have to keep going back to it to stay sane. This unhealthy dependency
creates an imbalance within you, for deep within, you know that you are responsible for your self,
and not somebody else. Apart from these inner dynamics, it also creates strain in your
interpersonal relationships. Thus it is not difficult to observe that such an attitude is
self-harming.

There is no excuse for reckless behaviour unless your aim is a stunted life. But if you are
someone to be satisfied with a stunted life, why grow desperate in the first place! Do not be your
own undertaker.
